SS Al-Ind-Esk-A-Sea
Exploration and mapping of a 30 year old shipwreck
At 10:14 in the morning of October 22, 1982, the seafood-processing ship Al-Ind-Esk-A Sea, which was on fire at its anchorage less than a mile off the Port of Everett, sank into Port Gardner Bay. For almost two days, since a welder’s torch accidentally set fire to insulation around the ship’s refrigeration units, crowds along the Everett waterfront watched the ship burn spectacularly in the harbor. This 336 foot long vessel was built in 1915 as a private cruise ship and also served as a Navy cargo ship before conversion to a fish processing ship.
In preparation for a mission to the wreck of the 900 foot deep Montebello wreck off the coast of California, OceanGate will perform multiple dives for equipment testing and wreck mapping. These dives will include detailed transects of the wreck using the high definition BlueView sonar as well as high definition video.
Big Al as she is affectionately known, rests at a depth of 200 feet in Port Gardner Bay about a mile from the Port of Everett.
